Medicine Hat News The Medicine Hat Mavericks bats sure made the trip to Moose Jaw on Wednesday. The Mavs scored 17 runs on 21 hits to beat the Miller Express 17-6, snapping a two-game losing streak. Medicine Hat lost 12-6 Monday at home to the Swift Current 57’s. They opened the scoring with a two-run second inning, kicked off by an RBI single from catcher Nate King. He then scored on a throwing error from the Moose Jaw pitcher on a single off the bat of right fielder Yusei Uzawa for the 2-0 lead. Moose Jaw tied the game up in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to centre field. The Mavs ran up the score from there, scoring eight runs in three innings for a 10-4 lead. They scored one run in the top of the third with a fielders choice knock with the bases loaded off the bat of shortstop Johnny Vulcano. Wednesday’s action was Vulcano’s first since July 17 in Moose Jaw. In that contest he he ran into centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. while both tried to make a play in the outfield. Vulcano roped a two-run double after the collision in that game but pulled himself from the game later on. The Mavs poured it on in the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits. Freeman Jr. and third baseman Tyler Vanneste each had an RBI single and left fielder Adam Vulcano drove in a pair with a two-run double off the left field wall for the 8-2 lead. Moose Jaw scored two runs in the bottom of the frame with two RBI singles to the outfield, making it an 8-4 Mavs’ lead. A two-run fifth inning put Medicine Hat ahead 10-4. Freeman Jr. grounded out to bring in a run. Uzawa moved from second to third on Freeman Jr.’s ground out and he tagged up to score on a fly ball to centre field off the bat of first baseman Aaron Vulcano. Uzawa dove into home at the same time Moose Jaw catcher Andy Rivas got into the lane to make a play. Uzawa collided with Rivas while touching the plate, called safe due to interference for the 10-4 lead. Mavs’ starter Luis Diaz worked through the sixth inning, finishing with the win, allowing the four runs against (three earned) on four hits, striking out one. Degan Sanders took over to start the seventh, making his debut with the Mavs. A leadoff walk and back-to-back doubles scored a pair of runs to end his night. Ryan Harney came into the game and he recorded three straight outs to end the frame and put an end to Moose Jaw’s comeback bid with the score at 10-6. The Mavs put their final stamp on the night with a seven-run eighth inning for the 17-6 final score. Aaron Vulcano led off the inning with a solo home run, his seventh long ball of the season. Jamel Chabot drew a bases-loaded walk to score the second run of the inning. Back to back singles from King and Uzawa made it a 14-6 score for the Mavs. Uzawa finished with four hits and an RBI, scoring three times. Freeman Jr. plated a third RBI on the night with a single in the infield and Vanneste tallied his fourth hit, driving in two runs with a double for his second and third RBIs on the night for the 17-6 final. Diego Centella took over on the mound for the Mavs to start the eighth. He worked the last two innings, allowing a pair of walks in the ninth, striking out two batters to preserve the lead. Medicine Hat outhit the Millers 21-6. The Mavs (27-17) are back at Moose Jaw on Thursday to face the Millers before they return to Athletic Park on Friday to host the Regina Red Sox for a double header. 17
