Softball roundup: U17 Thunder Red qualify for Westerns with provincials silver

The Medicine Hat U17 Thunder Red returned home from provincials with a silver medal and a spot at Westerns.

The Thunder lost in the finals of the U17AW provincial tournament held in Camrose over the weekend, falling 11-4 to the Calgary Adrenaline Jonah. Despite the loss, they’ve clinched a spot into Westerns held Aug. 7-10 in Regina.

They opened the weekend with a 7-0 win Friday over the West Hill Wild Bond. Adriene Campbell threw a five-inning no hitter, striking out 11 batters, also recording a hit and an RBI. Charli Allinson had two hits and two RBIs, scoring twice. Allie Evans had two RBI and scored twice, adding a hit.

The Thunder beat the Red Deer Rage 7-0 later in the day. Campbell was stellar on the mound again, allowing just two hits and three walks in five innings, striking out nine. Ryleigh Jackiw had two RBIs with a hit and a run scored, Sydney Thompson had a hit with an RBI and a run scored.

They lost 5-4 Saturday to the Calgary Adrenaline. Peightyn Williams had three RBIs with a hit and a run scored. Jackiw threw four innings with two strikeouts, Taryn Brost pitched two innings with one strikeout.

They rebounded to beat the SBR Rockies 7-0. Campbell threw six shutout innings, striking out eight. Allinson drove in four RBIs with three hits, Evans scored three times with a hit and an RBI.

The Thunder lost the first game Sunday, falling 3-2 to the Adrenaline. Allinson had a hit with an RBI and a run scored. Campbell started the game, with seven strikeouts in five innings. Jackiw pitched the last two frames with three strikeouts.

They clinched a spot in the finals with a 5-1 win over the Parkland Twins. Campbell had three hits with an RBI, scoring twice, she also three seven innings with 16 strikeouts. Thompson had two hits and two RBIs.

The Thunder fell to the Adrenaline for the third time in the weekend, losing 11-4 in the final. Allinson had a hit with two RBIs, Brost scored twice and added a hit, she started the game with three innings pitched. Jackiw threw the final inning.

The U17 Thunder Red are holding a bottle drive on July 22 to fundraise their trip to Westerns. They will be set up at the Redcliff ball diamonds from 4-7 p.m.

U15

The U15 Thunder Red were in provincials action, playing at the ‘B’ provincials held in Blackfalds.

They lost the first game 5-4 to the Parkland Twins Blue. Haidyn Pidlisny had two hits and an RBI, Kylie James, Kiya Britton and Kianna Mastel each had a hit and scored a run. Emily Kleemola started the game, working 3.2 innings with two strikeouts. Mastel pitched three innings with three strikeouts.

They lost a second game Friday, falling 10-4 to the Airdrie Angels. Britton and two RBIs with a hit, Paiten Marshall and James each had a hit and scored. Farrer Campbell and Kleemola each had three innings with three strikeouts.

The Thunder Black lost 11-5 to the RDFR Rage on Saturday. Farren Campbell had two hits with an RBI and a run scored. Kleemola had a hit with an RBI and a run scored.

Marshall and Audrey Scherer each had a hit with an RBI. Pastel threw two innings with a strikeout. Nellie Campbell threw an inning with a strikeout and Kleemola pitched the last three innings.

They finished the weekend with a 12-2 loss to the Sherwood Park Storm. Emily Agar-Weninger had two hits with an RBI, Marshall had a hit with an RBI. Avery Regehr threw 2.1 innings and Mastel finished the game on the mound.

The U15 Thunder Black were in ‘D’ provincials action in Wainwright this weekend.

They lost the first game, falling 10-8 Friday to the Consort Cubs. Breanna Lanuk had two RBIs with a hit and a run scored. Ryann Lewandowski had a hit with an RBI. Lewandowski threw four innings with four strikeouts and Janessa Weber worked an inning with one strikeout.

They beat the Grande Prairie Pirates 23-19 later in the day. Both Calico Jones and Lewandowski had three hits, two RBIs and scored three times each. Addyson Darr scored three times, adding two hits and two RBIs. Jaycee Pope scored four times, with two hits and two RBIs in the leadoff spot. Darr threw 2.2 innings to start the game, with four strikeouts. Lewandowksi recorded the final outs of the game, with two strikeouts.

The Thunder beat the SBR Rockies 17-10 on Saturday. Lanuk had a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, finishing with three RBIs, two hits and two runs scored. Lewandowski had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. She also started the game, working four innings with six strikeouts. Weber pitched one inning with two punch outs.

They lost the final game of the weekend, falling 13-5 t the Anselmo A’s. Pope had three hits with an RBI and a run scored, Lanuk had two hits with an RBI. Lewandowski had four strikeouts in four innings pitched. Darr recorded an out and Weber pitched the last inning of the game with a strikeout.

U13

The U13 Thunder White were in ‘D’ provincials action in Wainwright.

They won the first game Friday, beating Grande Prairie 16-8. Julie Giesbrecht knocked an inside the park grand slam in the second inning, finishing with two hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. Emery Tuchscherer scored three times, with two hits. She also started the game, working a strikeout. Kassidy Etienne pitched two innings with two strikeouts and Madelyn Ulmer pitched a frame with one strikeout.

They beat the Castor Gamblers 18-13 later in the day.

Etienne hit a home run, finishing with three RBIs, two hits and two runs scored. Ella Halladay also hit a home run, a solo shot on the day. Lilah Vair had two RBIs, two hits and two runs scored. Tuchsherer was in the circle, with 1.2 innings pitched and a strikeout. Etienne pitched the last three innings with six strikeouts.

They lost 14-11 on Saturday to the Hanna Wildcats. Tuchsherer and Goulard each had a home run, the former had two hits and two RBIs, scoring once and the latter had three RBIs with a pair of hits and runs. Etienne also had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Tuchsherer worked an inning with two strikeouts, Etienne pitched the last 4.2 with six strikeouts.

The Thunder White finished the weekend with a 12-10 loss to the Sedgewick Steelers. Etienne had a hit with an RBI and a run scored, Goulard scored twice and had a hit.

Etienne worked three innings with three strikeouts, Ulmer had 2.2 innings pitched and a strikeout.
