Medicine Hat News The Medicine Hat Mavericks needed the minimum Thursday night for the win. The Mavs scored in the eighth inning at Fort McMurray, blanking the Giants 1-0 to get back in the win column. They came into the contest, their third of a six-game road trip, off a 9-1 loss Wednesday at Sylvan Lake against the Gulls. Medicine Hat won the opening game of the road trip, beating the Gulls 3-2 on Tuesday. Both teams battled rain at Fort McMurray’s Legacy Dodge Field at Shell Place, collecting hits and stranding runners on bases as the game ticked by without a run. Mavs’ starter Fawster Voytko worked five innings, allowing four hits and walking five batters, striking out three. For the Giants, starter Luke Glenn worked seven innings with six hits and a walk allowed, striking out seven. A.J. Doll game into the game in the sixth inning, pitching two frames with a clean sixth before allowing a walk and a one-out single in the seventh, stranding both runners. The Mavs finally put up more lights on the scoreboard, scoring in the eighth inning. Right fielder Aaron Vulcano led off the inning by working a 2-2 count, driving a ball to centre field before flying around the bases to end up on third. He scored two pitches later on an RBI single from third baseman Tyler Vanneste who tallied his 21st RBI of the season. Luke Barrientos took the mound in the eighth with the one-run lead. He struck out the first two batters he faced before allowing a two-out single, inducing a ground ball to get out of the inning. Barrientos returned to the bump in the ninth. The Giants drew a one-out walk before an error put runners on first and second with just one out. He induced an infield fly out and then a fly out to left field for the final out, preserving the 1-0 win. Medicine Hat outhit the Giants 8-6, committing a pair of errors to Fort McMurray’s one blunder. The Mavs (19-11) face the Giants in a rematch on Friday to finish the two-game set before heading to Spruce Grove to face the Energy City Cactus Rats for a pair of games against the Energy City Cactus Rats. 13
