The Medicine Hat Mavericks will return to Athletic Park on a high note.

The Mavs wrapped up a two-game road trip to Weyburn with a split, beating the Beavers 7-3 on Wednesday after falling 4-3 in the ninth inning on Tuesday.

Medicine Hat rebounded quickly from the loss, scoring all seven of their runs in the first four innings of the mid-week contest.

The Mavs kicked things off in the first inning with an RBI single from right fielder Aaron Vulcano. He scored centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. who got on base on an error, moving to second on a groundout and to third on a single from third baseman Carter Roth.

They notched another run in the second inning, with an infield RBI single from left fielder Micah Dvorak, knocking in catcher Jaden Babiuk from third. Babiuk led the inning off with a fly out to left field that was dropped by the Weyburn defender, allowing the Mavs’ catcher to advance to second. He made it to third on fly out to right field off the bat of Nate King.

The Mavs doubled up their lead in the third, plating a pair for the 4-0 advantage. Aaron Vulcano roped a double to left field and then moved up to third on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Johnny Vulcano. He had a quick jog home as Evan Morrison blasted the first pitch he saw. The Mavs’ first baseman pulled a home run over the right field fence for his fifth long ball of the season.

Their offensive start to the night capped off in the fourth inning, seeing three runs score for the 7-0 lead.

Dvorak led the frame off with a double, followed up by second baseman Yusei Uzawa who knocked a single to left field two batters later. Roth scored the pari with a double to centre field, giving him the WCBL lead in RBIs 27 on the season. He leads the league in batting average (.469) and hits (45). Johnny Vulcano scored the third run of the frame, with an RBI single to second base, scoring Roth who moved to third on a single from Aaron Vulcano.

On the mound, Mavs’ starter Gary Dornan damned up the Beavers through five innings, allowing five hits spread across that span as his lineup ran up the score. Weyburn scored a pair of runs in the sixth, one on a wild pitch and the second on a fielders choice play.

Dornan earned the win, allowing six hits and two runs (one earned), surrendering three walks while striking out three batters.

Garrick Levesque took over in the seventh, allowing a run on one hit and three walks, with a strikeout. Ryan Dexter took the bump to start the bottom of the eighth, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning to preserve the Mavs’ 7-3 lead. Weyburn made a push in the ninth with one out. They had runners on first and second, bringing Luke Barrientos into the game from the bullpen.

He recorded a strikeout and induced a deep fly out to right field, with Aaron Vulcano making the catch at the outfield wall for the final out. The Mavs outhit the Beavers 11-8, both teams committed a pair of errors.

The Mavs (16-7) return to Athletic Park on Thursday to kick-off a four-game home stand, hosting  the Regina Red Sox for the first of a two-game set. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
