newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com The Medicine Hat Mavericks got back in the win column as they kicked off the busiest stretch of their season. The Mavs beat the Brooks Bombers 6-3 on Tuesday at Athletic Park, snapping a two-game slide that saw them outscored 23-3 over the weekend in Regina by the Red Sox. Tuesday’s game was the first of 12 games in 13 nights, nine played at Athletic Park. Medicine opened the scoring right from the get go as centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. hit a leadoff double, scoring on a wild pitch five batters later for the one-run lead. The Bombers tied the game up in the third inning with a pair of hits following a leadoff hit by pitch. That was the lone blemish for Mavs’ starter Fawster Vostok who picked up the win on the mound. He worked five innings, allowing the lone run on seven hits, striking out seven. The Mavs grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, coincidently scoring a five-spot for the 6-1 advantage. Outfielder Aaron Vulcano notched a two-run double to left field for the 3-1 lead, giving his 15 RBIs on the season. He moved up to third base on a passed ball and scored on an error to make it a 4-1 game. Catcher Jaden Babiuk scored on a sacrifice bunt by Micah Dvorak that the Mavs’ outfielder beat out the throw on. The Bombers’ catcher corralled the ball in front of the plate and tried to dive back for the out at home, missing out before being too late on the throw to first. Catcher Nate King scored later in the frame on a wild pitch, giving the Mavs’ their 6-1 lead. The Mavs had three shutout innings from the bullpen, with Luis Diaz throwing two scoreless frames, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts. Diego Centella worked a frame, allowing just a hit. Closer A.J. Doll took over in the ninth, allowing a pair of walks that scored on a single and sacrifice out to bring the Bombers within three. That’s as close as they got as Doll recorded his second strikeout of the inning for the final out in the 6-3 win. Brooks outhit Medicine Hat 12-8, both teams committed a pair of errors. The Mavs (12-6) were back in action Wednesday, on the road against the Swift Current 57’s (3-13). That game was not complete by press time. Following the road game, the Mavs are back at Athletic Park for four straight home games, starting tonight with the first of two against the Saskatoon Berries. First pitch tonight is set for 7:05 p.m. 12
