Drag strip hits full speed with weekend of racing

The Medicine Hat Drag strip hosted three days of races across Father’s Day weekend.

The Drag Strip held a points weekend with jet cars, seeing 16 race classes run down the strip.

Buz Buzunis of Airdrie kicked the weekend off, winning the Friday Street race, finishing ahead of Ted Buzunis of Fort Macleod. Adam Hettler of Redcliff won the Friday Night Bike race, with Medicine Hat’s Keith Easton finishing second.

Saturday’s action started with the Jr. Thunder race, won by Lukas Keim of Claresholme. Medicine Hat’s Rhys Cramer finished second and Ella Jennings of Redcliff finished third.

Ryder Harrison of Raymond won the Jr. Lightning class, finishing ahead of Brandon Peck of Carseland, Alta. John Natiusk of Calgary won the final Jr. race Saturday, taking first place in the Street race. Ryder Harrison of Raymond finishing second in the race.

Corey Burkett of Dunmore won the Sportsman race, with Allan Kestner of Calgary finishing second. Ashley Szola of Medicine Hat finished third.

Medicine Hat’s Chance Edelman won the Pro race, finishing ahead of fellow local racer Harvey Turner. Aaron Steinkey of Dunmore won the Super Pro race, with Curtis Valk of Medicine Hat coming in second. Connie Wilk (Dunmore) and Danny Holmedal (Maple Creek) came third and fourth respectively.

The final race Saturday, the Pro Bike class, was won by Clayton Potter of Calgary, who finished ahead of Medicine Hat’s Riley Toth. Two Hat racers, Dennis Cotten and Dave Toth, finished third and fourth respectively.

Aven Stinky of Dunmore won the Jr. Thunder race on Sunday, finishing ahead of Calgary’s Brian Nastiuk. Paxton Frey of Medicine Hat finished third. Allyson Keim of Claresholm won the Jr. Lightning race, with Ryder Harrison of Raymond coming in second.

Harrison won the Jr. Street race on Sunday, beating Medicine Hat’s Bella Winslow.

Corey Burkett of Dunmore won the Sportsman race, finishing ahead of Calgary’s Nick Harding. Marlins Ulriksen and Teagan Thorpe finished third and fourth in the race.

Medicine Hat’s Chance Edelman won the Pro race, finishing ahead of Langdon, Alta.’s Jason Hughes. Perry Bell of Medicine Hat finished third.

Isaac Stettner of Regina won the Super Pro race, finishing ahead of Marvia Hawker (Medicine Hat) and Danny Holmedal (Maple Creek).

Riley Toth of Medicine Hat won the final race, taking first place in the Pro Bike class. Redcliff’s Adam Hettler took second place.

The Drag Strip is off until July 4-6 when they host the NHRA National Open.
