Medicine Hat News The Medicine Hat Mavericks put up a pair of four-run innings to get back in the win column Wednesday night. The Mavs overcame a 5-0 deficit at Regina, beating the Red Sox 9-6 in 10 innings for their sixth win of the WCBL season. Medicine Hat’s five-game win streak to start the 2025 season was snapped after a 14-9 loss Tuesday on the road against Regina. The Red Sox led the offence early in the game scoring two runs in the second inning with a two-run home run from Brady Bye. Mavs’ starter Tyler Spruiell was lifted in the fifth inning with the bases loaded as Luis Diaz took over on the mound. Regina capitalized, scoring a run on a sacrifice groundout, adding two more on an RBI single. Spruiell’s stat line finished with five runs against on one hit, six walks with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Diaz earned the win with 4.2 shutout innings, striking out four batters while allowing just two hits. The Mavericks drew within one with a four-run top of the sixth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, catcher Jaden Babiuk roped a single to right field to score two runs. Just five pitches later, centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. knocked a single to his stomping grounds in the outfield, scoring another two runs to cut Regina’s lead to 5-4. They tied the game up in the top of the eighth with a solo home run from Aaron Vulcano, his second of the season, the first coming in Tuesday’s loss. Medicine Hat pushed for a late lead in the ninth, running the bases loaded with just one out. They couldn’t scrap across a run and held Regina off the board in the frame to force their first extra inning game of the season. The Mavs made good with the automatic runner, Adam Vulcano, starting the extra frame on second base. Babiuk bunted Adam Vulcano over to third, making it on base as well. Freeman Jr. knocked in a run with an RBI single, followed up by an RBI single from left fielder Micah Dvorak to make it a 7-5 Mavs’ lead. They rounded out the frame with a sacrifice groundout from second baseman Carter Roth and Dvorak scoring on a dropped third strike to make it a 9-5 lead. A.J. Doll took over on the mound for the Mavs to start the 10th, allowing one run on a sacrifice fly before shutting the door on the 9-6 win. He recorded a strikeout in the inning. Medicine Hat outhit the Red Sox 16-3, holding Regina hitless in the last three innings of the win. The Mavericks also worked without an error on defence, Regina had three misplays. The Mavs (6-1) wrap up a three-game road trip on Thursday at Moose Jaw against the Miller Express. They return to Athletic Park on Friday, hosting the Brooks Bombers. 14
