The Medicine Hat Boxing Club was represented at the national level last week.

Three members of the local boxing club – Nate Vossler, Jacob Walne and Asher Softic -represented the club at the national championships held at the University of Laval in Quebec City, May 28 to June 1.

Walne fought first for Medicine Hat, taking on Alexis Paquin from Quebec. Coach Kerry Fahlman says Walne was fighting well until he caught a big hook to the jaw and the fight was stopped in the first round.

Vossler drew Alberta’s Oliver McCluskey and defeated him by unanimous decision to move on. The next fight he drew Quebec’s Noah St Pierre and defeated him by another unanimous decision to move on to the Gold Medal match on Sunday.

In the final he boxed Mantej Gill from Ontario, a tough fight Vossler ended up losing to finish second among 15 fighters in his division. He also won most courageous male boxer of the tournament.

Softic drew Ontario’s Jackson Savoir and lost a unanimous bout. There were only three fighters in the 80 kg. class, meaning Softic returned to Medicine Hat with a bronze.

The Medicine Hat Boxing Club will take a break for the summer before returning to action in the fall.
