Medicine Hat News The Western Canadian Baseball League’s lone undefeated record was snapped Tuesday night. The Medicine Hat Mavericks suffered their first loss of the season, falling 14-9 at Regina to the Red Sox. Medicine Hat won their first five games of the season, with Tuesday’s loss the first game this season they haven’t scored double digit runs. Tuesday’s contest was played with heavy hearts in the WCBL as the Red Sox mourned the sudden loss of pitcher Jesse Lubiniecki. The 22-year-old Regina product passed suddenly on Friday from a single-vehicle rollover in Rosebud County, Mont. while he was on his way home to Regina from California. The game started with a moment of silence and saw the Red Sox don a No. 33 patch on their jerseys to commemorate their fallen teammate. Regina jumped out early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, with back-to-back doubles scratching the first run before a throwing error with the bases loaded saw three more Regina runs cross home plate. Medicine Hat got on the board in the third, plating a run with an RBI double from shortstop Johnny Vulcano. Regina answered in the bottom of the frame for the 5-1 score. The two teams continued to trade runs, Medicine Hat notching two runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run from right fielder Aaron Volcano, his first in the WCBL. Regina tallied five in the bottom of the frame to lead 10-3. They added another run in the fifth for the 11-3 advantage. Mavs’ starter Fawster Voytko was lifted in the fourth inning, charged with three earned runs on seven hits and one walk, recording six strikeouts. Garrick Levesque worked out of the fourth inning, allowing two hits while striking out two batters. Diego Centella worked a bulk of frames, recording a pair of strikeouts in three innings on the mound. He allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits. Regina scored two more runs in the seventh for the 13-4 lead. Medicine Hat showed life an inning later, scoring six runs to make it a 13-9 score. Local product Evan Morrison knocked in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single. Catcher Nate King roped a double to centre field to score two more runs, he scored four pitches later on a Regina error. Two batters later, centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. scored on another error to bring the Mavs within four runs. Regina gave themselves more breathing room, adding a run in the bottom of the eighth on an error for the 15-9 final. Graham Stack pitched the eighth for the Mavs, allowing two walks with a strikeout and the unearned run. Second baseman Carter Roth hit a leadoff single in the ninth and was stranded there as the Mavs couldn’t complete the comeback. They outhit Regina 15-14, also committing six errors to the Red Sox’ four. The Mavs (5-1) are back in Regina on Wednesday to face the Red Sox before they head to Moose Jaw on Thursday to face the Miller Express. 16
