Portland’s Tyson Jugnauth named WHL defenceman of the year

Portland Winterhawks defenceman Tyson Jugnauth took homes WHL honours for the top defenceman of the year.

The WHL announced Tuesday the 21-year-old blue liner is the recipient of the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy. He is the eighth Winterhawks skater and the first since Derrick Pouliot in 2014 to earn the honours.

Medicine Hat Tigers defenceman Tanner Molendyk was one of the four other nominees, alongside Noah Chadwick (Lethbridge Hurricanes), Luke Shipley (Brandon Wheat Kings), Mazden Leslie)Vancouver Giants) and Viliam Kmec (Prince George Cougars).

Jugnauth led all WHL defencemen in scoring with 13 goals and 89 points in 65 games. He added four goals and 33 points in 18 playoffs games for Portland who were swept by the Spokane Chiefs in the Western Conference Championship series.
