sports@medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The Monsignor McCoy High School track and field team will host a student-led mini-meet for K-6 students this week. It’s the second year for the event, featuring students from St. Louis, St. Francis Xavier and St. Michael’s schools. It’s fully planned and led by the McCoy students under the guidance of track and field coach Amber Hamilton. From organizing event logistics and stuffing candy bags, to running stations and supporting athletes on the day of, the McCoy students are taking the lead in delivering a fun and inspiring day for their younger peers. “I think this meet provides a great opportunity for students within the division to experience a sport alongside individuals who live and breathe it every day,” Laine Gauthier, a Grade 12 student and event organizer said in a statement. “This sport is often overlooked early in someone’s sport journey and tends to sneak up on them in middle school. “The goal of this meet is to introduce students to the sport and encourage them to feel comfortable enough to join a team when the opportunity arises, rather than be scared by it. This event also creates a sense of community within the division, hopefully sparking connections and inspiring students to look forward to what comes ahead.” The mini-meet will feature a variety of classic track and field events, aiming to foster teamwork, school spirit and mentorship among students across local Catholic schools. 8
