The Eagle Butte Talons senior baseball team were champions over the weekend.
The Talons recorded a perfect weekend to capture the UCT High School baseball championship in a tournament hosted by the Monsignor McCoy Colts over the weekend.
Both Eagle Butte and McCoy were undefeated through the round robin, setting up for a finals match that saw the Talons win 6-4 to take the crown.
“It was just awesome to see all the hard work pay off,” said senior captain Dylan Amundson. “We believed we could win this thing from the start, and we came out and proved it.”
Amundson led the Talons’ offence with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Ty Meyer and Kane Bishop each had a hit, RBI and a run scored.
Eagle Butte led McCoy 3-1 after the first inning, scoring three more times in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-2, holding on for the win. Ethan Bowey scattered 10 hits across five innings pitched, striking out five batters without allowing a walk.
In the final game, McCoy’s offence was led by Pryce Velichko who tallied three hits with an RBI and a run scored. Tate Bowal also had a pair of hits with an RBI. Jayden Mook started the game for McCoy, working four inn gins with three strikeouts.
Eagle Butte kicked the weekend off with a 13-7 win Friday morning over the Magrath Zeniths. Amundson had three hits with three runs scored, adding an RBI. Lucas Dulle had four RBIs with two hits and two runs scored. Bishop started the game, recording six strikeouts in three innings pitched. Wade Davies recorded two punch-outs in two innings of work.
They continued momentum with a 14-2 win over the Medicine Hat High Hawks.
Bishop had three RBIs on three hits with two runs scored. Owen Fisher worked three innings with five strikeouts, Beau Cavan pitched an inning.
The Talons put themselves in the finals with a 16-5 win Saturday over the Raymond Comets.
Bowey had four RBIs with two hits and a run scored, Isaac Stenhouse tallied two runs scored and two RBIs on two hits. Amundson had three runs scored with a hit and two RBIs, Meyer also had three runs scored with two hits and two RBIs. Amundson started the game, notching six strikeouts in three innings of work. Merrick Kurpjuweit recorded two punch outs in an inning of work.
McCoy opened their tournament with a 14-4 win Friday over the Raymond Comets.
Bowal had three RBIs on three hits with two runs scored, Cole Carlson had three RBIs on three hits and a run scored. Landon Cunningham started the game, recording five strikeouts in five innings pitched.
They beat the Hawks 16-1 later in the day, led by Asha Frey and Velichko who each tallied three hits with three runs scored and two RBIs. JJ Harnett had two hits with two RBIs and two runs scored. Frey worked the three-inning game, recording six strikeouts.
The Colts earned their final spot with a 2-1 win over Magrath on Saturday.
Frey had an RBI off a hit and run scored, Harnett added an RBI with a hit. Nixon Kunkel had four strikeouts in five innings pitched.
The Hat High Hawks and McCoy Colts face off tonight at Jeffries Field, game time at 5:30 p.m.
