City’s top badminton talent puts on show in local playdowns

The best high school badminton players in Medicine Hat put their talents on display Wednesday.

Players from the four Medicine Hat high schools competed at the city finals held at Medicine Hat High School. Hawks athletes competed against fellow badminton players from Crescent Heights, Eagle Butte and Monsignor McCoy, all vying for a spot in the South zone finals.

Medicine Hat will host the best of the South next week, with singles action played at Crescent heights and doubles held back at Hat High, both on April 16.

Senior

Eickhen Knauer of McCoy won the boys singles competition with Alexander Sykes of Hat High finishing second.

Kyla Velilla of Hat High took first in the girls singles division, with Gabrielle Blackburn, also of Hat High, finishing second.

The McCoy Colts duo of Shawn Gripp and Adam Sim were the top senior boys doubles team, with fellow Colts Hayden Gebhart and Cruz Pancott finishing seance.

Cheska Vilella and Preste Adriaensen from McCoy were the girls doubles winners, with fellow Colts Nevaeh Stock and Kasey Martin coming second.

Jake Collier and Anii Jimbo of Hat High were the top finishers in the seniors mixed doubles division, with Kate MacMIllan and Kyree Stern-Rebmann from Crescent Heights finishing second.

Intermediate

Mannat Singh of Hat High won the intermediate boys singles division, with Lucas Dulle of Eagle Butte finishing second.

Dani Gagdag from McCoy took top honours in the girls singles competition, Serenity Allen of Eagle Butte came in second.

The duo of Charlie Funk and Nash Lehr of Eagle Butte won the Boyds doubles division, with Graydon Holowachuk and Charlie Haddon of Crescent Heights finishing second.

Hat High’s duo of Richelle Tabuada and Alexis Hanna won the girls doubles competition, with Presley Pederson and Sophia Day from McCoy coming in second.

Angelina Poddar and Joshua Tecling of Hat High won the mixed doubles competition, beating out fellow Hawks Zainab Riaz and Matthew Rose who finished second.

Junior

The junior boys singles division was won by Tomas Campbell of Hat High, he finished ahead of McCoy’s Mike Fentabil.

Autumn Lobert of Hat High won the junior girls singles competition, with Alexa Gallwey of Eagle Butte finishing second.

The pair of Alexandre Oullet and Martin Bird from ELC won the boys doubles division, with Ethan Yang and Carter Prince of Hat High coming second.

Lillie Doud and Tianna Laychuk of McCoy took first place in the girls doubles competition, with Kapri Costan and Teagan Torgerson, of Eagle Butte coming second.

Ryder Todd and Carly Luscombe of McCoy finished first in the mixed doubles division, with Bella Ferguson and Parker Bellamy of Eagle Butte finishing second.
