Rattler roundup: Rattlers women’s basketball sweeps weekend at Snake Pit

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers’ women’s basketball team picked up a pair of wins over the weekend.

The Rattlers’ women’s team defended the Snake Pit, beating the Olds College Broncos 75-55 on Friday and 69-47 on Saturday.

Alexis Watkiss had 18 points and five rebounds in Friday’s win. Both Breanna O’Connor and Jaida Gold had 12 points as well. In Saturday’s victory, Watkins notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rattlers’ men’s basketball team also faced Olds College, falling 89-88 on Friday before winning 83-65 on Saturday. Olds College took the win with a three-pointer with 22 seconds left in Friday’s game. Early in the game at the free throw line, Cooper Ward became the Rattlers’ men’s all-time scorer with 1,080 points. He finished the night with 30 points and 12 rebounds.

Jordan Biggar led the offence in Saturday’s win with 26 points. Ward had a second double-double in the weekend, with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Rattlers’ women’s (8-10) and men’s (9-9) basketball teams head into the final weekend of the regular season, hosting the SAIT Trojans on Friday before facing them on the road Saturday.

Volleyball

MHC’s women’s volleyball team also picked up a pair of weekend wins, sweeping a weekend of matches on the road. They beat Olds College twice, winning in five sets Friday (25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 20-25, 15-10) and in three sets on Saturday (25-22, 25-23, 25-19).

In Friday’s five-set win, Jaivyn Barabe had 10 kills for the Rattlers, both Fayth Spencer and Haylee Fleck had seven kills each. Fleck led the Rattler attack Saturday with eight kills.

The Rattlers’ men’s team lost both games to the Broncos, falling in three sets on Friday (19-25, 20-25, 20-25) and in three sets on Saturday (11-25, 18-25, 15-25).

Jordan McKee had nine kills on Friday, adding another 10 in Saturday’s match.

The Rattlers’ men’s (4-13) and women’s (4-13) volleyball teams are on the road Friday against SAIT before hosting the Trojans on Saturday to finish their regular season.

Hockey

MHC’s women’s hockey team had two road games over the weekend, facing the NAIT Ooks.

They lost the first game of the weekend 7-0 on Friday, with Jessika Charron and Anna Stewart combining for 54 saves in net.

The Rattlers lost 5-2 on Saturday, with both Kiyra Kletzel and Sienna Vieira notching a goal and an assist each. Charron made 46 saves.

MHC’s women’s hockey team (2-19) will host the Red Deer Polytechnic at the Moose Rec Centre for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
