Rattler Roundup: Rattlers women’s indoor track team finishes fourth

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers’ women’s indoor track team finished strong at the first ACAC meet of the season.

The Rattlers women’s team was led to a fourth place finish at The Concordia Open in Edmonton on Saturday by Madison Scrimger, who won the 1,500m and 3,000 races, also running a leg on MHC’s 4x400m relay team that finished fourth.

Sprinters Annika Marshall and Adara Both posted top-eight finishes in three events each. Marshall lowered her own school record in the 50m, finishing 5th in the short sprint, and also contributed relay legs on the 4 x 200m (fifth) and 4 x 400m (fourth). Both placed eighth in the 50m and anchored MHC in both relay races.

Ellie Barlow recorded a seventh place finish in the 3,000m and an eighth place finish in the 1,500m.

Red Deer Poly took the top spot in the women’s standings with 67 points, ahead of SAIT Poly (46 points), Lethbridge Poly (43 points) and the Rattlers (37 points).

On the men’s side, MHC’s team finished in eighth overall. Top performances from the Rattlers included Chibuikem Chukwunyerenwa in the 300m (fifth) and 50m (eighth), Spencer Wilson 3,000m (eighth), the 4 x 200m relay team (fifth), and the 4 x 400m relay team (seventh).

Next up for the Rattlers indoor track team is ACAC 2 – The Red Deer Poly Meet on Feb. 15.

Basketball

The Ratlers’ basketball teams were on the road for a pair of games against the Red Deer Polytechnic.

MHC’s men’s team split the weekend, winning 84-82 on Friday before falling 99-83 on Saturday.

Jordan Biggar led the Rattlers in Friday’s win with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Cooper Ward had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

In Saturday’s game, Ethan Robinson had 18 points.

The Rattlers’ women’s team dropped both games to Red Deer, falling 71-50 on Friday and 74-48 on Saturday.

Jaida Gold and Alexis Watkiss each had 16 points in Friday’s game, with Watkiss also recording nine assists. Watkiss also led the offence Saturday with 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Rattlers men’s (8-7) and women’s (6-9) basketball teams are back on the road for a pair of games against Briercrest College.

Volleyball

MHC’s volleyball teams hosted Red Deer Polytechnic for a pair of games over the weekend.

The men’s team dropped both contests, falling in four sets in both games.

In Friday’s loss (25-21, 15-25, 22-25, 23-25), MHC was led by Jordan McKee who had 19 kills. On Saturday (25-19, 23-25, 10-25, 16-25), McKee had 13 kills.

The women’s team dropped both games in three sets.

On Friday (15-25, 12-25, 6-25), Malea Kletzel had five kills. In Saturday’s match (16-25, 11-25, 23-25), Haylee Fleck and Kadence Wiggins had three kills each.

The Rattlers’ men’s (4-9) and women’s (2-11) volleyball teams host Briercrest College for a pair of matches at the Snake Pit on Friday and Saturday.

Futsal

The Rattlers’ futsal teams hosted the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks on Saturday.

The men’s team (2-0) won 9-1 and the women’s team (1-1) lost 2-1. No individual stats were reported.

Both team’s head to Lethbridge over the weekend for four games across Saturday and Sunday, facing the Ambrose Lions, Olds College Broncos, SAIT Trojans and Red Deer.

Hockey

The Rattlers’ women’s hockey team had a home-and-home with the SAIT Trojans over the weekend.

They were shut out in both games, falling 3-0 at the Hockey Hounds arena on Friday and then 4-0 Saturday on the road.

Anna Stewart made 32 saves in Friday’s loss, Jessika Charron made 41 stops in Saturday’s defeat.

MHC’s women’s hockey team hosts Olds College for a pair of games this weekend on Friday and Saturday.
