The Cubs beat the Ponoka Stampeders 8-1 on Saturday, a rebound win off a 6-0 loss Friday to the North division leading Sylvan Lake Wranglers. Kyle Woolridge led the Cubs’ offence with three goals and five points in Saturday’s win. Caleb Garrecht tallied four assists, Josh Aitken had a goal and two assists and both Callen Prosofsky and Nolen Sutherland had a goal and an assist. Denyn Smith scored a solo tally as well, Adam Ranger made 17 stops. Friday’s shutout loss to Sylvan Lake was the first time the Cubs have been blanked this season. Tyler Wakelam made 33 saves in the loss. The Cubs (24-8-2) remain in third place of the South division, one point behind the Strathmore Wheatland Kings (25-8-1) with the same number of games played. Medicine Hat hosts the Coaldale Copperheads on Friday and the Wranglers on Sunday as they continue the push for second in the division and the first-round playoff bye. They’ll face Strathmore on the road Feb. 7 before hosting the Copperheads Feb. 9 to end the regular season. 9
