sports@medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The Medicine Hat Tigers completed a trade Friday. The Tigers traded 17-year-old defenceman Matt Paranych to the Regina Pats for a pair of draft picks. Medicine Hat received a 2025 third-round pick (Calgary) and a 2028 fourth-round pick (Regina). The 17-year-old Paranych last played for the Tigers on Nov. 22, missing seven games as a healthy scratch while awaiting a trade. Head coach and general manager Willie Desjardins previously told the News the young defenceman was looking for more ice time and he was looking for a new opportunity. “It’s tough, we’ve got a good defence, he’s playing good minutes but he’s a young guy who believes in himself and he wants to play more,” Desjardins said. “So we’ll have to look around and see if there’s an option for him someplace else.” The Edmonton product suited up in 20 games this season, notching three goals and six points. He scored his first WHL goal in a 4-2 opening-night win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Sept. 29. In 76 career WHL games, Paranych has three goals and 16 points. “Matt is a great young player with lots of potential,” Desjardins said in a team release. “We wish him and his family all the best in Regina and thank him for his time here in Medicine Hat.” Paranych was in the lineup for the Pats on Friday, donning No. 44. 10
