The Monsignor McCoy Colts won a battle of Medicine Hat on the gridiron Friday night.

The Colts beat the Crescent Heights Vikings 39-0 in a consolation playoff game. McCoy came into the game off a 17-15 loss in the 4A semifinals to Chinook High School the week prior, Crescent Heights off a 37-6 loss to W.R. Meyers in the 3A semifinals.

McCoy head coach Jole Krassman liked his team’s effort in the bounce-back.

“It was a good solid effort, we asked the team to play a full complete game and we did start to finish,” Krassman said. “We came out and we executed. There’s still a few things to always get better at, we’re always striving to get better. But I’m proud of the kids. They’re just rising up and they’re buying in, and they’re doing a great job.”

McCoy got on the scoreboard early and often, with three scores in the opening quarter.

Carsen MacDonald had a rushing touchdown for the first major of the game.

They scored a second TD with a school-yard play. Quarterback Carlin Messmer handed the ball off to Keagan Surovy who sent it downfield to Levi Dreger for the touchdown.

They rounded out the quarter with Messmer calling his own number, scoring a rushing touchdown.

The Grade 11 QB Messmer showed off his arm in the second quarter, with passing TDs to Baker Thompson and Surovy for a 35-0 lead at the half.

They got a point in the third quarter with a punt through the end zone and kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter for the 39-0 final score.

It’s to be to determined whether the Colts will play another consolation game or if Friday night’s win under the lights was the last contest of a resurgence season.

Krassman is proud of his seniors and how far they’ve come in the three years he’s been at the helm.

“I’m super proud of them, this team was the first team that I brought through,” Krassman said. “It’s been three years with these guys, we’ve brought them down from some bad beatdowns and some big-time adversity, to rising up to where we’re at right now.

“I’m just proud of them. We keep getting better every week and that’s the goal, just to keep instilling that into all of our players as we grow and our younger guys as we go. We’re trying to keep turning the corner, we’re just going to keep trying to grow this program and we’re just going to try to keep getting better.”

Vikings’ head coach Anthony Anderson declined to comment following the game.
