The Monsignor McCoy Colts senior football team is making the push for playoff football.
The Colts picked up a sixth win of the season with a 31-13 victory Thursday at the Methanex Bowl over the Chinook Coyotes.
McCoy came into the contest as the 10th ranked 4A school and leave with a 6-2 record, suffering only losses to Medicine Hat High School and a concession to the L.C.I. Rams due to a scheduling conflict.
Head coach Cole Krassman says they approach the game with the focus of playing like it is the postseason.
“We just have to keep elevating and getting better and we’re just working,” Krassman said. “We’re getting guys into practice, we’re working hard and we’re starting to believe in ourselves and our abilities. We’re just going to keep grinding, getting better one play at a time, one day at a time and one game at a time.”
The Colts jumped on the board early in the contest, with Hudson Mastel picking up a Chinook fumble for a defensive touchdown, a score that gave them the early momentum needed, Krassman said.
“That was the message all week, defence is going to win the games for us,” Krassman said. “That’s what we’re going to need to have when we get into the playoffs.”
The Colts scored a touchdown in the second quarter, with Carsen MacDonald scoring on a rush attempt. Quarterback Carlin Messmer called his own number twice in the second half, scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns.
McCoy tallied a field goal in the third quarter and held on in the fourth to the 24-0 lead before Chinook scored two touchdowns, failing on a two-point conversion, for the 31-13 final.
The Colts host the Cold Lake Royals for an exhibition contest on Oct. 19, the final game before zone playoffs start with Chinook being McCoy’s likely opponent. Krassman says they will watch video on Cold Lake and prepare for the matchup, looking to eliminate mistakes in the game ahead of playoffs.
Krassman, careful to not look past an exhibition game, was excited by the idea of entering playoffs looking for more than just a positive note to end the season on as they have in years past.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the kids, they’re elevating,” Krassman said. “We’ve got some guys stepping in on short notice, we’ve got some injuries and guys are stepping in for us and stepping up. This whole team has grown so much in this last year and we’re getting better game by game. We just have to keep elevating.”
