sports@medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews A brief step back and the Medicine Hat Cubs keep moving forward. The Cubs surrendered their first loss of the season this past weekend but quickly bounced back, maintaining top spot in the HJHL through the first three weekends. The Cubs lost 2-1 Friday at the Kinplex to the Coaldale Copperheads, tasting defeat for the first time this season. They responded with a 4-2 road win Saturday, beating the Three Hills Thrashers for a second weekend in a row. In Friday’s loss, Hayden Gebhart scored a second period goal to tie the game up at 1-1 before Coaldale scored the eventual game winner in the third period. Tyler Wakelam made 25 saves in the loss, while Medicine Hat outshot Coaldale 34-27. Coming off defeat, the Cubs scored three unanswered goals Saturday night to propel them in the win. Makhi Carriere scored in the first and third periods for a pair of markers, Nolan Sutherland and Jacob Hazzard both scored and captain Callen Prosofsky had two assists. Adam Ranger made 38 saves in the win. The Cubs (5-1) remain tied for first in the HJHL with the Okotoks Bisons (5-1). Medicine Hat looks to distance themselves from the Bisons with a pair of games this weekend. They head to Cochrane on Saturday to face the Generals before hosting the Rocky Rams on Sunday for a 3 p.m. contest at the Kinplex. 9
