sports@medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The weekend of the summer at the Connaught Golf and Country Club has arrived. The 91st Southeastern tournament kicks off Saturday for three days of action at the local course, with 112 golfers vying for the championship honours. Connaught CPGA professional Brian Oliphant says they haven’t been wishing summer away but have been looking forward to the weekend all season. “It’s our biggest event of the year so we’re always looking forward to it,” Oliphant said. He says the name to watch over the weekend will be defending champion Ryan Werre, who is looking for his fourth straight Southeastern championship. Beyond him, Oliphant says it will be an exciting field to watch. “Our championship flight is all plus-handicap or under two golfers,” Oliphant said. “In the top 16, anyone has a chance to win it.” Heading into the tournament, Oliphant says the rain Wednesday always helps the course battle the summer heat. He says the course has handled the summer well and will be in top shape for the capstone weekend. “The course is in really good shape, it’s a little dry with no rain for a couple of months but the course itself is in really good shape,” Oliphant said. Play gets underway Saturday morning and continues into Sunday, with the 91st tournament wrapping up on Labour Day Monday. 11
