The Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede’s pro rodeo put on a show for yet another year.
The three-day event featured some of the world’s top rodeo talent on full display at the grandstand for those who sat through the usual Stampede heat and cheered on the cowboys and cowgirls trying to earn their bucks.
Championship Saturday decided just one of the eight rodeo events, with four winning scores/times coming from the Friday night under the lights. Two of the winners came from the opening night action on Thursday and the Breakaway roping event winner came out of the slack performance Thursday morning.
Aubrey Ross of Botha, Alta. had a 2.5 second ride in Thursday’s Breakaway roping slack performance, winning $1,621.50. Kashley Seitz (High River), Darby Wilkinson (Arrowwood, Alta.) and Kyla Kelly (Red Deer County) all tied for second place with a time of 2.7 seconds for $1,198.50 in winnings.
Strawbs Jones of Duffield, Alta. won the bareback riding competition with his 83.5-point ride Friday night on Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s 661 Stands Alone, winning $2,526.72. Orin Larsen of Inglis, MB. finished second with his 82-point ride Thursday night, winning $2,075.52. Dantan Bertsch of Ponoka took third place with his 80.5-point ride on Saturday, earning $1,624.32.
The steer wrestling winner came from Friday’s competition, with Layne Delemont of Cardston finishing first with a 3.9 second ride to win $3,350.16. Jesse Brown of Baker City, Ore. took second place with his 4.3 second ride on Friday, earning $3,070.98. A pair of cowboys tied for third place, with Dallas Frank of Parkland County and Brendan Laye of Consort, Alta. Eating running 4.7 second rides, taking home $2,512.62 each.
Brent Buss (Ponoka) and Joey Romo II (Nanton, Alta.) took the team-roping competition on the first night of rodeo action, earning $2,643.04 each with a 5.0 second ride. Tuftin McLeod (Morse, Sask.) and Brady Chappell (Moose Jaw) finished second with a 5.8 second slack performance, earning $2,298.30 each. Trey Gallais (Sundre) and Jeremy Buhler (Arrowwood) also placed with a slack performance, taking third with a 6.1 second ride to win $1,953.55 each.
The saddle bronc riding competition, and $3,053.12 in winnings, went to Layton Green of Millarville, Alta. for his 88 points on Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s 476 Double Red on Saturday. High River’s Lucas Macza, took second place with his Saturday afternoon 87.5-point ride, earning himself $2,507.92 in winnings. Dawson Hay (Wildwood, Alta.) and Kyle Wanchuk (Sherwood Park) each had 86-point rides on Saturday and Thursday respectively to tie for third place, earning $1,690.12 each.
The tie-down racing winner came from Friday’s competition, with Bo Pickett of Caldwell, ID. taking first place with a 8.7 second ride, winning $3,282.48. Shane Smith of Wimborne, Alta. Finished second with a 9.2 second ride Friday, earning $3,008.94. Two cowboys tied for third place, with Shane Hanchey (Carmine, Tex.) and Scot Meeks (Lethbridge) putting up 9.3 second rides in the Friday and slack competition respectively. Each winning $2,461.86.
Angela Ganter’s (Abilene, Tex.) 17.28 second ride in Thursday’s barrel racing competition was the quickest of the weekend, earning her $3,266.50. Vanessa Leggett of Kamloops finished second with her 17.41 second ride on Saturday, winning $2,776.53. Tiany Schuster of Krum, Tex. finished third with a 17.46 ride on Friday, earning her $2,286.55.
Maple Creek’s Jared Parsonage was the Stampede bull riding champion, with his Friday night 90-point ride on Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s 877 Down With The Devil. Parsonage took home $3,211.04. Edgar Durazo of Moctezuma, Sonora Mexico took second place with am 87.5-point ride Thursday, winning $2,637.64. Two bull riders tied for third place, with Dakota Buttar’s (Eatonia, Sask.) and Jordan Hansen (Amisk, Alta.) both having 87-point rides on Friday, winning $1,777.54 each.
