Mavs hit seven home runs in big win Saturday

By James Tubb on July 27, 2024.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks were propelled victorious by the long-ball Saturday night.

The Mavs hit six two-run home runs and seven total long shots in an 18-6 win at Brooks over the Bombers. The Explosive win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Mavs, who dropped both games in a two-game set against the Weyburn Beavers. The most recent being a 7-5 loss on Friday.

The Mavs had multiple offensive leaders, with catcher Jaden Babiuk at the top, hitting two of the two-run home runs to cap off a five-RBIs, three hit and two runs scored day. Left fielder Micah Dvorak hit two home runs as well, tallying four RBIs on four hits with three runs scored.

While Medicine Hat’s offence was the story of the game, it was Brooks who kicked things off Saturday.

The Bombers scored three runs in the first inning on four hits for the early lead. Medicine Hat answered back with two runs in the top of the third, plating the pair on the first of Babiuk’s two-run home runs.

They exploded offensively in the fourth, scoring six runs on a trio of two-run home runs for an 8-3 lead.

Dvorak kicked things off with a two-run home run. They added another two runs on a two-run blast from designated hitter Michael Quick and rounded out the frame with Babiuk’s second two-run blast of the night.

The Mavs added a single tally in the fifth on an RBI single from shortstop Johnny Vulcano to lead 9-3.

Mavs’ starter Adam Golby was lifted after five innings on the mound. He shook off the three-run, four-hit first inning and allowed just three base runners in the next four innings. He struck out eight batters, picking up the win.

The Mavs made it 10-3 in the top of the sixth with an RBI double from Quick. Leo Woods took over on the bump for Golby to start the sixth inning.

Brooks showed some life in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on a two-run home run of their own to make it a 10-5 game.

Medicine Hat regained the seven-run lead, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-RBI double from right fielder Jordan Phillips. The Bombers scored a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, making it a 12-6 game. Woods’ night was finished after the two innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with a strikeout.

That was as close as they got as the Mavs poured on six runs in the ninth for an 18-6 lead.

Babiuk got the inning started with an RBI triple for his third hit and fifth RBI on the night. Phillips knocked a two-run home run and first baseman Nick Thibodeau followed that up with a two-run home run of his own. Dvorak wrapped the frame with a solo home run for the 18-6 lead.

John Walsh took over on the mound for the Mavs in the eighth and worked the final two frames. He allowed one hit in the eighth and recorded a punch-out. Before he could get started on the mound in the ninth, the lights at Elks field turned off due to an automatic timer set for 10 p.m. according to the Bombers’ broadcast. After an 18-minute delay, Walsh struck out the side for the Mavs win.

They out-hit the Bombers 19-12, both teams committed one error. The Mavs had six hitters collect a multi-hit night.

The Mavs (28-20) return to Athletic Park to host the Swift Current 57’s on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
