By James Tubb on July 21, 2024.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks couldn’t carry over the all-star success from Saturday night.

In their first game post WCBL all-star game, the Mavs lost 6-4 Sunday at Swift Current to the 57’s. Medicine Hat went into the weekend with a 5-4 10th inning walk-off win over the Weyburn Beavers on Friday.

The Mavs opened the scoring Sunday afternoon.

Second baseman Marshall Burke scored on a wild pitch for the early 1-0 advantage.

The 57’s scored two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead. They pushed for a third run in the frame with a single to right field and a runner storming home from second base but right fielder  Jordan Phillips threw out the runner at the plate, keeping it a 2-1 Swift Current lead.

Medicine Hat tied up the game and grabbed a lead, scoring in back-to-back innings.

Designated hitter Nick Thibodeau had an RBI double in the third to make it a tied 2-2 game. Phillips plated a run in the fourth with a bases-loaded walk and left fielder Evan Morrison scored on a wild pitch for a 4-2 lead.

Adam Golby started the contest for the Mavs and worked five innings on the mound. He allowed the two runs on five hits and two walks with a strikeout. Ryan Dexter took over on the mound to start the sixth inning and he recorded two outs before he was lifted after allowing a bases loaded walk. Leo Woods took over and Swift Current finished the frame with four runs, for a 6-4 lead.

Dexter’s appearance finished at four runs against (three earned) on three walks with one strikeout. Woods worked 2 1/3 innings to finish the game, striking out three batters while allowing three hits and a walk.

The Mavs were limited to one hit and a pair of walks in the last three innings of the game, falling 6-4.

Swift Current led the game in hits, 8-5. The Mavs (26-17) are off Monday before they host the Regina Red Sox for a two-game set at Athletic Park on Tuesday and Wednesday.
