Mavs fall 5-4 Thursday to East-division leading Red Sox

The Medicine Hat Mavericks lost to the East division’s best Thursday night.

The Mavs fell 5-4 to the Regina Red Sox, lengthening Regina’s division lead. Medicine Hat came into the contest off an 11-6 win Wednesday at Moose Jaw over the Miller Express.

Medicine Hat opened the scoring in the fourth inning.

First baseman Landon Mokris drove in a run with an RBI single to right field. They pushed for a second run with centre fielder Brody Gardner trying to score, but he was thrown out at the plate for the lone run.

They added to their lead in the top of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs with one swing of the bat.

Third baseman Blake Dale drove a two-run home run over the fence for a 3-0 lead. His fourth home run of the season gave the Mavs a needed three-run advantage with Regina striking in the bottom of the frame.

The Red Sox scored a pair of runs on a two-run double from Kody Hanna to left field to make it a 3-2 game.

Medicine Hat scored a solo run in the sixth on an RBI triple from right fielder Jordan Phillips for the 4-2 advantage.

Dylan Runge started the game for Medicine Hat and worked into the sixth inning. He was lifted with a runner on base who later scored off Leo Woods. Runge finished his night with two runs against on six hits, two walks with five strikeouts.

Regina plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-4 lead. Woods was relieved by Max Hudlow who worked the rest of the game on the mound for the Mavs.

Woods and Hudlow’s pitching stats were not available by press time.

Medicine Hat in the last three innings of the game, notching two hits, but couldn’t complete the comeback to fall 5-4.

The Mavs (25-16) return to Athletic Park on Friday to host the Weyburn Beavers ahead of the WBCL all-star game on Saturday.
