Mavs wrap Saskatchewan road trip with 11-2 win Monday

The Medicine Hat Mavericks are returning home on a high note.

The Mavs finished up a five-game Saskatchewan road trip with an 11-2 win Monday at Weyburn over the Beavers. The win gives the Mavs a 4-1 record over the road trip.

After a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, the Mavs blew the contest open with a seven-run third inning.

An RBI double from third baseman Tyler Vanneste and a two-run single from designated hitter Jordan Phillips opened the scoring in the frame.

They added on with a two-run single from shortstop Blake Dale for a 5-0 lead and both centre fielder Brody Gardner and right fielder Brady Bean had RBI singles for the seven-run frame.

The Mavs added another run to their lead with catcher Nick Thibodeau scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth inning for an 8-0 advantage.

Weyburn added their two tallies spread across two frames, scoring on a double to centre field in the fifth inning and an RBI single to left field in the sixth inning.

Medicine Hat also scored in the sixth inning, notching two runs on a home run from Phillips. His sixth home run of the season gave the Mavs 10 runs in the game, ultimately leading 10-2 after six frames.

Braedon Davis started the contest on the mound for the Mavs and picked up a quality start with the win. He allowed the two runs (one earned) on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Mavs rounded out the scoring with a run in the seventh inning. Gardner scored on a wild pitch for the 11-2 final score.

Ryan Dexter took over on the mound in the seventh inning and pitched the last three innings of the game, allowing two walks and recording three strikeouts.

Medicine Hat outhit the Beavers 11-5 and drew nine walks in the contest.

The Mavs (20-14) are back at Athletic Park on Tuesday as they host the Swift Current 57’s.
