The Medicine Hat Mavericks picked up their third straight loss Wednesday. An early lead was erased and the Mavs couldn’t comeback on the road at Swift Current, falling 10-8 to the 57’s. It’s the third loss in a row for the Mavs, who were off Monday and Tuesday with their last game a 10-3 loss Sunday at Athletic Park to the Sylvan Lake Gulls. Medicine Hat opened the scoring with three runs in the opening frame. A fielders choice hit off Nick Thibodeau’s bat scored a run and a batter later, Tyler Vanneste knocked in two more runs with a two-run single for the early 3-0 lead. The 57’s grabbed a run in the bottom of the second to make it a 3-1 game. Medicine Hat added another run in the top of the fourth, with Marshall Burke scoring a run on a sacrifice hit for a 4-1 lead. The 57’s scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run game. They blew the game open and took a 9-4 lead with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Braeden Davis started the game for the Mavs and was lifted in the fifth inning, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Evan Gant took over and worked an out, getting charged with three runs against with two walks. Dylan Runge worked 2.2 frames in relief, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk, striking out four batters. The Mavs clawed their way back with four runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it a 9-4 game. Jordan Phillips knocked in a run on an error by the Swift Current second baseman. A pitching change and three pitches later, Nick Thibodeau knocked in two runs with a two-run double. Brady Bean drove Thibodeau in with an RBI single to right field to cap off the inning. Josh Landry took over on the mound for the Mavs in the bottom of the eighth, allowing a run on two hits, two walks with a strikeout for a 10-8 Swift Current lead. The Mavs notched a hit in the ninth but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling 10-8. They outhit Swift Current 13-11 and the 57’s committed three errors to the Mavs’ one blip. Medicine Hat stranded 12 runners on base, Swift Current left eight runners on base. The Mavs (13-11) are off Thursday before they head to Okotoks on Friday for the first of a two-game set against the Dawgs. 16
