The Medicine Hat Tigers’ struggles at Swift Current’s InnovationPlex continue.

The Tigers lost 4-1 to the Broncos on Friday, for their ninth loss in that rink in the last five seasons. The loss also closes the gaps in the Central division, with the Broncos moving within four points of the Tigers.

Medicine Hat came into the contest off a 9-7 win Monday in Edmonton over the Oil Kings. The Broncos had won four straight, making it five in a row with the victory.

Swift Current opened the scoring late in the first period as Luke Mistelbacher scored on a power play with 1:52 left in the frame.

Early in the first the Tigers had a scary situation with forward Oasiz Wiesblatt. The 19-year-old forward was awkwardly hit into the boards and had to be helped off the ice. He missed the rest of the period but returned at the start of the second period and played the rest of the game.

The Broncos added to their tally with two markers in the second frame. Conor Geekie scored on a penalty shot off a shorthanded breakaway and a couple minutes later, Mistelbacher scored on a rush to make it a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.

The Tigers got on the board in the third period. Tomas Mrsic scored on a power play to make it 3-1 with his 17th of the season. With the goal, the Tigers avoid their first shutout of the 2023-24 season.

Josh Filmon scored soon after Mrsic’s goal as the Broncos wrapped up the 4-1 victory.

Ethan McCallum made 27 saves in the loss, across the ice from him, Reid Dyck turned aside 20 shots.

Medicine Hat was one-for-four on their power play, Swift Current was one-for-two.

The Tigers (33-18-3-2) host the Broncos on Saturday at Co-op Place.
