Rattler Roundup: Rattler men’s futsal team clinches playoffs

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers men’s futsal team punched their postseason ticket over the weekend.

The team split their final weekend of the regular season to finish second in their ACAC division with a 7-1-2 record. They beat the Olds College Broncos 3-2 to open play Saturday before falling 5-1 to the undefeated SAIT Trojans in their final match, no goal scorers were reported.

They will head to Portage College in Lac la Biche for the futsal championships March 8-10.

The Rattlers women’s futsal team dropped both of their Saturday games, falling 3-2 to Olds College and 5-1 against SAIT, finishing their season outside the playoffs with a 4-5-1 record.

Volleyball

The Rattlers men’s volleyball team split their weekend at home, beating the Concordia University Thunder in three sets Friday (25-16, 25-23, 25-16) and falling in three sets Saturday to the King’s University Eagles (25-22, 25-23, 25-20).

Nathan Chernik and Jordan McKee both led the attack Friday, each recording eight kills. Chernik led the way Saturday with nine kills.

MHC’s women’s team dropped both weekend matches, falling in three sets Friday to Concordia (25-17, 25-18, 25-14) and in three sets Saturday to the Eagles (25-13, 25-17, 25-23).

Kadence Wiggins hit double-digit kills on Friday, recording 10. A trio of Rattlers had four kills on Saturday, with Olivia Jacobson, Anica Haberstock, Jaivyn Barabe and Campbell Bosch each leading the team with four.

The men (4-13) and women (0-17) wrap up their regular seasons this weekend on the road, facing the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves on Friday and the NAIT Ooks on Saturday.

Basketball

MHC’s men’s basketball team ended their weekend on a high note, with a 97-66 win Saturday over King’s University. Jordan Biggar had 27 points and Cooper Ward tallied a 22-point, 11-rebound double double in Saturday’s win.

They opened the weekend with a 109-101 loss Friday to Concordia University, Biggar had 30 points and Ward notched 27 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rattlers women lost both weekend games, falling 68-46 Friday against the Thunder and 76-42 on Saturday against the Eagles.

Breanna O’Connor had 16 points in Friday’s loss, with Jaida Gold leading the way Saturday with 11 points.

MHC’ men (4-15) and women (2-17) host the Northwestern Polytechnic on Friday and NAIT on Saturday to finish their seasons.

Hockey

The Rattlers women’s hockey team had a three-game home weekend against the Lakeland College Rustlers. They lost 9-0 on Friday, 9-1 on Saturday and 11-1 Sunday.

Jessika Charron made 34 saves in Friday’s loss. Kinlee Fahselt turned aside 36 Rustlers shots on Saturday, with Kennedy King tallying MHC’s lone goal. King found twine again, scoring in the Rattlers’ loss on Sunday. Charron and Fahslet split duties in net, for a combined 28 saves.

The Rattlers (0-23) face the SAIT Trojans on the road Feb. 23 and host them on Feb. 24 to close out their debut season in the ACAC.
