Tigers fall 5-3 at Red Deer on Friday

By James Tubb on January 5, 2024.

Red Deer finally got one on the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Tigers lost 5-3 Friday night to the Rebels, for their first loss of the season against Red Deer. Medicine Hat had won the previous three matchups, including a 3-2 overtime victory Tuesday at Co-op Place.

Oasiz Wiesblatt, Gavin McKenna and Kadon McCann all scored in the loss Friday. Reid Andresen had an assist on both Wiesblatt’s 14th of the season and McCann’s seventh.

The lone assist on McKenna’s power play goal, his 13th marker of the season, came from goaltender Evan May who made 25 saves in his first start since Dec. 1, 2023.

Red Deer’s offence came from two players, with Jhett Larson scoring a hat trick  to give him nine on the season and Carson Birnie adding two goals of his own for seven on the campaign.

The Tigers saw the return of Tomas Mrsic to the lineup after he missed four games with illness. Liam Ruck was also recalled and was in the lineup.

Cayden Lindstrom (upper body) missed his fifth straight game, Andrew Basha was scratched with illness and Bogdans Hodass was out due to a one-game suspension.

The Tigers (23-12-2) host the Tri-City Americans on Saturday and the Spokane Chiefs on Sunday.
