The U14B Mayhem started Medicine Hat’s top ringette tournament with an energetic matchup.

The Mayhem led 4-2 at one point in the second half against the Regina Inferno before ultimately tying their opening game of the Ed Horvath Invitational tournament.

Coach Loralee Eastland says they weren’t at the top of their game Friday morning, but can use it as a momentum builder for the rest of the tournament.

“We have a few things to work on, we have been been working on some new plays and new systems this past week so I’m really proud of them for keeping the tie,” Eastland said. “We have more gas in the tank for sure.”

The Mayhem came into the tournament with a 3-5 record in Chinook league action.

Breanna Lanuk and Brea Butterfield each had a goal and assist Friday with Onyka Funk and Jordyn Leblanc each scoring a goal as well. Sophia Smith was between the pipes.

Eastland says they look to improve all parts of their game throughout the rest of the tournament. The Mayhem grabbed their first win at the event on Friday afternoon, a 6-5 victory over South Calgary, and will finish their round robin Saturday morning against the Regina Raptors.

No matter how their Ed Horvath tournament shakes out, Eastland says it’s always one of her favourite weekends of the year.

“This is the best tournament in Canada,” Eastland said. “It’s the most well run, it’s the most exciting, people come from all different provinces to come to this tournament. Mr. Ed Horvath is here this weekend doing some reffing, and that’s who our tournament is named after. It’s always really exciting because our fans get to watch how hard the girls work.”

The Ed Horvath Invitational wraps up midday Sunday with the gold-medal games at the Moose Rec Centre. The U19 gold-medal game is at 2:15 p.m. The U16 championship is at 12:30 p.m.

U14 settles first-place medals at 11 a.m. at the Moose Rec Centre. The U12C final is at 8 a.m. and the U12B championship game is at 9:30 a.m.
