An early deficit held the Medicine Hat Tigers back Wednesday night. The Tigers allowed three goals in the first period, ultimately losing 5-3 at Swift Current against the Broncos. Medicine Hat came into the contest with a three-game winning streak and ranked as the seventh team in the CHL’s top-10 rankings. Medicine Hat struggled with exiting their own end and had multiple turnovers in the first that eventually led to the Swift Current offence. Connor Hvidston scored 3:43 into the game for an early Broncos lead. Medicine Hat product Caleb Wyrostok had the lone assist. The Broncos struck again 3:25 later, with Ryan McCleary finding the back of the net. They rounded out their frame with a backhand goal from Brady Birnie at the 12:13 mark for the 3-0 lead. The Tigers got on the board later in the first with a power play goal from Cayden Lindstrom. Andrew Basha and Dru Krebs had the assists. Lindstrom struck again on a power play, scoring the only goal of the second frame for his team leading, 20th goal of the season. Gavin McKenna and Oasiz Wiesblatt had the helpers. Swift Current scored early in the third, with Tyson Laventure tickling twine 2:55 into the final frame. Rhett Parsons struck late in the third with a point shot, his third goal of the season. Tyler MacKenzie and Wiesblatt had the assists. But it was Swift Current, capitalizing late on an empty net, with Hvidston scoring on the open cage after a missed shot from Clarke Caswell. The Broncos held on for the 5-3 win. Ethan McCallum made 23 saves for the Tigers in his fourth start of the season and his young career. Across the ice from him, Swift Current net minder Matthew Kieper made his team debut with a 28-save performance for the win. The 19-year-old was acquired by the Broncos on Nov. 18.
