The U17AAA South East Athletic Club Tigers play Sunday in a game more important than in the standings.
The U17 Tigers are hosting their annual cancer awareness game at the Hockey Hounds arena. The Tigers will take on the Calgary Bulls at 3:15 p.m. in the game hosted in memory of Amara Welford, who died Sept. 12 after a long battle with cancer.
“Hosting a cancer awareness fundraiser game has been a tradition that I have had the privilege to be part of since 2016,” head coach Kevin Riehl said. “With past and present coaching staffs, we have always felt it was a great way for our players and players’ families to give back to the community. We realize that by getting together as a team to host the game, get donations, make the caramel-covered popcorn, is a great way to raise funds for the Margery E Yuill Cancer Centre.
“We know cancer has affected us all in some way and we are trying to do our part to lessen the burden for anyone going through this battle.”
There will be multiple fundraising efforts during the afternoon’s game, including caramel popcorn sales as well as a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and a Medicine Hat Tigers game-worn jersey auction.
“The cancer awareness game is important to me because of the impact cancer has left on my life and the lives of others,” SEAC captain Colby Gulliver said. “Spreading awareness and having the chance to do so (while) playing hockey is an amazing opportunity for our team.
“We are happy to do things as a team that leave a positive impact on the community. I am looking forward to the game on Sunday and so are the rest of the guys. We are hoping to fill the stands and support a good cause.”
The Tigers and Bulls came together to create a YouTube video saying who each player and coach is playing for in the cancer awareness game.
