Tigers pickup second win of weekend, beating Edmonton 5-1 Sunday

The Medicine Hat Tigers wrapped up a busy weekend in winning fashion. The Tigers rolled into Edmonton and beat the Oil Kings 5-1 Sunday night, giving them five of a possible six points on their three-game weekend. Medicine Hat came into the contest off a 4-1 win Saturday night at Co-op Place against the Everett Silvertips. The Tigers got on the board first, scoring in the opening frame. Cayden Lindstrom sent a cross-crease pass to Tyler MacKenzie who put the puck past Edmonton net minder Kolby Hay to open the scoring. Andrew Basha had the second assist on MacKenzie’s 10th goal of the season, which also gave him points in six straight games. Just over five minutes later, the Tigers struck again. Defenceman Bogdans Hodass picked up the puck in the neutral zone and carried it over the blue line before firing up and over Hay’s shoulder hugging the post. Shane Smith and Hunter St. Martin had the assists on Hodass’ second of the year, putting Medicine Hat ups 2-0 with 5:24 left in the frame. The Tigers kept the offence flowing in the second period. After an Oil King took a four-minute minor for high sticking, the Tigers rattled off two power play goals for a 4-0 lead. Lindstrom jammed a loose puck in on the man advantage, with St. Martin and Josh Van Mulligen picking up the helpers. Exactly two minutes later, Oasiz Wiesblatt send a puck to the front of the net where Reid Andresen knocked it in for his fifth of the season and the 4-0 lead. Basha had the second assist to put Medicine Hat up only 4:48 into the middle frame. Edmonton got on the board just past the halfway mark of the third period. Roan Woodward was the last Oil King to touch the puck as it pin-balled in front of Evan May and ended up in the back of the net for an Edmonton power play goal. May finished his night with 30 saves, earning his seventh win in 15 starts. The Tigers regained the four-goal lead 56 seconds later when Wiesblatt wired a shot past Hay on the rush for his fourth of the season. Vasyl Spilka had the lone assist, giving the Czechia forward three assists in his first six WHL games. Medicine Hat held on for the 5-1 win, giving them five of a possible six points on the weekend, putting their record at 11-5-2. The Tigers are of until Friday when they head to Moose Jaw to take on the Warriors. Their next home game is Saturday when they host the Wenatchee Wild for the first time. 13-12
