Sixty players competed at the tournament that got underway Tuesday and wrapped up Saturday with championship matches. Calvin Heller (1) defeated Craig Weich (3) 6-2, 6-2 to capture the men’s open singles title. Tyler Warken defeated Peter O’Driscoll 6-1, 6-1 to take the men’s open singles consolation. The men’s intermediate singles title was won by Luke Knapczyk, who defeated Josh Gazdag 7-6, 6-4. The intermediate singles consolation was won by Easton Kurpjuweit, who beat Lydell Wenzel 6-2, 6-1. Dannan McElroy-O’Driscoll (1) defeated Kristen Wenzel (2) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to claim the women’s open singles championship. CoraLee Riehl took the women’s open singles consolation by defeating Irene Giesbrecht 6-2, 6-2. Calvin Heller and Jin Shin (1) defeated Brent and Richard Meyer (2) to capture the men’s open doubles title, winning in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The men’s open doubles consolation went to Dave Reinheller and Jose Polit who defeated Jordan Schibler and Jess Ferris 7-6, 6-4. The intermediate men’s doubles title was won by Theoron Bensler and Easton Kurpjuweit, after defeating Rob Hazelaar and Lorne Pretzlaw 6-1, 6-1. David Schnare and Lyle Garrecht took the consolation, defeating Lincoln Bensler and Karter Kurpjuweit 6-0, 6-1. Kristen Wenzel and Dannan McElroy-O’Driscoll (1) defeated Tracy Heller and Linda Norris (2) to capture the Women’s open doubles championship, winning in two sets 6-3, 6-0. The consolation was won by Sheila Reinheller and Wai-Cheng Pretzlaw, who defeated Carla Thorogood and Lilly Laurent 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The next event for the local tennis club is the Medicine Hat Open Mixed Doubles Tournament, scheduled to run Sept. 8-9. 15
