Medicine Hat’s best high school badminton players showcased their skills Wednesday afternoon.
Players from the four Medicine Hat high schools competed at the city finals held at Hat High. Hawks athletes competed against fellow badminton players from Crescent Heights, Eagle Butte and Monsignor McCoy, all vying for a spot in the South zone finals.
The best of the South zone will divulge on the Hat on April 28 playing at both Crescent Heights and Hat High.
Lance Gamao from McCoy took top honours in the senior boys singles division with Josh Gazdag from McCoy coming in second and Caleb Driediger from Eagle Butte finishing third.
Hat High’s Natsu Adachi took first place in the senior girls singles group, with Valentina Cabello Silva from McCoy taking second place.
The senior boys duo of David Ogunbo and Colton Downey from Hat High were the top senior boys doubles group with fellow Hawks Adi Sugi and Demitir Danyluk taking second place. McCoy’s Dion Lorenzo and Nathan Seto were in third.
Jordan Weisgerber and Kylee Waldegger from McCoy finished in first of the senior girls doubles division, with Triniti Collard and Addisyn Helma from Hat High coming in second. Karla Gomez and Belen Ros, also from Hat High, finished third.
Hat High’s Tom Vorhriede and Ilaria Ferrari were the top finishers in the seniors mixed doubles.
In the intermediate division, McCoy’s Gerhard Knauer Bravo took first place in the boys singles competition slotting ahead of fellow Colt Makai Howes who finished second, Hat High’s Tyson Van Ham and Eagle Butte’s Braxton Spencer.
Helena Oestergaard from McCoy took first in the intermediate girls singles competition with Eagle Butte’s Maddy Ferguson in second place. Hat High’s Bailey (no last name provided) was in third with Katie Kuiper from Eagle Butte in fourth.
Carston Kenney and Mohammad Khawaja from Hat High were the top boys doubles team with Crescent Heights Jeff Warwick and Daniel Haddon finishing in second. Hat High’s Bil Bil and Cyton Corsie were third and Kylie Miller and Liam Parsons from McCoy finishing fourth.
Hat High’s Kylee Sehuler and Nikoo Jahandardoost took first in the intermediate girls doubles competition with Eagle Butte’s Kamea Clark and Quinn Olson finish second.
Olivia Bender and Rylin Bender from McCoy took first in the mixed doubles group with Sabrina Giorgi and Eddie Young from Hat High finishing second. McCoy’s Regine Simbulam and Nathan Roscoe were in third with Zach Job and Tanisha Acharya from Hat High in fourth.
The junior boys singles division was won by McCoy’s Shawn Grippo with fellow Colt Maddox Strothmann finishing second. Eagle Butte’s Torin Derksen was in third with Hat High’s Tyson Miller in fourth.
Arinn Driediger from Eagle Butte was first in the junior girls singles group with Sophie Kerr from McCoy in second. Eagle Butte’s Kenzie Carson was in third and Hat High’s Jaz Gates took fourth.
The duo of Hayden Gebhart and Cruz Pancotta from McCoy were in first place of the boys doubles with fellow Colts Eickhen Khauer and Zack Pay finishing second. Eagle Butte’s Zion Raible and Cole Edmomstone were in third.
Presley Aelriaensen and Cheska Velilla from McCoy were first place in the junior girls doubles with Crescent Heights Kate MacMillan and Kyree Rebmann Stern finishing second. Lauren Hassler and Marley Howes took third place for Eagle Butte.
Hat High’s Logan Mellish and Kyla Velilla took first place in the junior mixed doubles with Eagle Butte’s Kenzie Regler and Vosh Cole in second and fellow Talons Emma Sumay Migvey and Tony Gallwey in third.
