jtubb@medicinehatnews.com@ReporterTubb The Rattler Run is gearing up for another year of racing for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. Medicine Hat College is hosting the 44th annual Rattler Run on April 29 with sights set on it being a larger event than the 2022 race, the first in person since COVID-19. There were 499 runners who took part in that 2022 race and they look to double that number this year taking part in the 3 km, 5 km and 10 km races. Race director and Rattlers cross-country coach Bill Corcoran says they are already ahead in terms of preregistered runners and is looking forward to race day. “We’re looking for a little bit bigger event this year and hopefully the weather’s good and should get to be spring here,” Corcoran said. “It’s a really great event and it’s very inclusive. We have the three kilometre run that’s oftentimes families with kids, sometimes moms are pushing strollers in the, in the 3k. The 5k is a little more difficult because you have to go down to the bottom of College hill, around Kin Coulee and come back up. Then for those who want a bigger challenge, we have the 10k, which follows the same route as the 5k but you also go up and down the Ajax hills.” Interested runners can register at rattlerrun.ca The Rattler Run is pairing up with the City of Medicine Hat and Elm Street School in a program called Kicks for Kids, aimed toward getting running shoes for children. Corcoran says if people have gently used or new pairs of athletic shoes and want to donate them they can bring them to the event and they will pass them along to Elm Street School. The shoes donated don’t have to be only kids sizes as some kids quickly grow into adult shoe sizes. Anyone interested in donating shoes ahead of the race can drop them off at MHC’s Athletic office. Corcoran says they are also still looking for volunteers to help with the Rattler Run with a volunteer T-shirt promised for those who help. Anyone interested can contact the athletics department. 12
