The Medicine Hat Tigers held their own in Winnipeg on Tuesday. The Tigers were within one late before ultimately falling 3-1. The loss comes six days after beating the Ice 6-4 in Medicine Hat. Shane Smith opened the scoring 7:39 into the contest off a scramble besides the Winnipeg net. Tyler MacKenzie picked up a rebound and sent Smith a pass who was alone in front of goaltender Daniel Hauser before scoring his 19th of the year. Winnipeg tied the game up at 1-1 with a goal less than three minutes later. Zach Benson banked in a shot off the back of Evan May’s pad for his 36th of the year. The two teams traded chances and power plays in the second period before the Ice capitalized on a Tigers man advantage. Matthew Savoie picked up a loose puck in the slot in his own end before turning on the burners and scoring on a 2-on-1 breakaway with 1:20 left in the second period for his 34th goal on the season and the 2-1 lead. Medicine Hat pushed in the third period as they outshot Winnipeg in the period 10-9 and in the game 28-27. With May on the Tigers bench, Ice forward Conor Geekie grabbed a loose puck and with 52 seconds left, fired the puck into the empty net for his 32nd goal and the final 3-1 lead. May had 24 saves in the loss in his first start since he was between the pipes in the Tigers win against Winnipeg. Across the ice from him, Hauser had 26 saves. The Tigers (26-25-8-1) are back in action on the road Wednesday for their final matchup of the season against the Brandon Wheat Kings. That game gets underway at 6 p.m. MST. 11
