jtubb@medicinehatnews.com@ReporterTubb The top prospects for the 2021 WHL Draft will be heading to Red Deer. The Western Hockey League announced Tuesday that the city of Red Deer would play host for the 2021 WHL Cup. The four-day series, running from Oct. 20-24, features the top 2006-born players from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, all of whom will be eligible for the 2021 WHL prospects draft. The draft, which is scheduled for Thursday, December ninth, will take place online. The Medicine Hat Tigers have the eighth overall pick of the draft. All 22 WHL Clubs participated in a four-phase lottery, unique for the 2021 WHL draft. The lottery determined the order of selection for the first round of the draft, with inverse order of standing from the 2020-21 WHL regular season determining the order of selection for the second round and all subsequent rounds. The WHL Cup, which will be played at the Peavey Mart Centrium – home of the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels, was established in 2009 and is held every season except in years when the Canada Winter Games are being played. This is the ninth year for the event. Team Alberta is a five-time champion of the Cup, winning in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Team Saskatchewan is the defending champion of the WHL Cup, having won the tournament in 2019, beating Team Manitoba 4-2 in the gold medal game. 8
