Janick Lacroix earned one more title belt before the new coronavirus brought the sports world to its knees.

Lacroix, the former national champion with the Medicine Hat Boxing Club, won his senior division at the Alberta Golden Gloves in Calgary this past weekend. But as coach Kerry Fahlman described it, it wasn’t easy.

“He ran into a tough one,” wrote Fahlman in an email to the News. “Janick took a big shot early in the first but fought on heart alone to get the win.”

The man delivering the blow was Calgary’s Devon Beach, a veteran of the sport.

Fahlman’s idea was to challenge Lacroix as much as possible with nationals coming up in Quebec. But as of Thursday, Boxing Canada had postponed the tournament, so there’s no certainty when or if it’ll happen.
