The Gas City needs more referees on the gridiron.

Hat High Mohawks head coach Quinn Skelton says with growing numbers from the atom level to high school, local referees have their hands full and are reaching out to the community in search of more officials to oversee games.

“The game is really evolving here and we’re getting more and more interest,” said Skelton. “We’d really like to get more people involved with our referee society right from atom all the way up through high school, supported by Medicine Hat Tackle Football. It’s a great way to stay involved with the game, so any alumni out there that want to come back and give to the game and get involved with football, and any young guys that are around and want to make a few bucks refereeing, it’s really an easy way to do that.”

Skelton says anyone interested in becoming a referee can contact him at 403-580-9995, or MHTFA president Mike Baker at 403-878-3918 for more information. Skelton added training programs will also be in place for prospective referees closer to the start of the fall football season.

“We’ll bring some people in and work to help guys get to Level 1 at least, do the intro stuff to refereeing and get them on the field,” he said.
