Medicine Hat News
Some of Medicine Hat’s youngest hockey players had a terrific weekend on home ice.
The Hounds Black atom team won a Tier 2 division crown at the Kinplex Sunday, winding up a 16-team tournament with a 4-1 win over the Indus Hurricanes.
Liam Green, Jaxon Benci, Chad Schulz and Jackson Brassard scored against Indus. Medicine Hat had needed a shootout win in its semifinal and got great goaltending from Hudson Corbett all weekend long.
Okotoks beat Cochrane in the Tier 1 final.
Midget AA
In the only game they’ll play against West Central’s Tigers all regular season, the Medicine Hat midget AA Hounds ensured it was memorable.
At Rocky Mountain House, Medicine Hat won 9-1 in a game that included a rare line brawl.
Eight players — four from each team — were handed game misconducts for fighting with 6:26 left in the third period.
Levi Schlosser had two goals and two assists, while Cam Hall had two goals and a helper. Brandon Kasdorf and Ryley Manz each had a goal and two assists.
Teron Funk made 23 saves in a game his team outshot the home side 39-24.
Bantam AAA
On the heels of their league’s all-star game, the South East Athletic Club’s bantam AAA Tigers were dealt a loss Sunday in Lethbridge.
The host Golden Hawks held on for a 3-2 win despite the Tigers firing 17 shots on net in the final frame and pulling their goaltender late.
Emanual Hudson’s goal with 14:19 to go broke a 2-2 deadlock for Lethbridge. Dawson Seitz had scored in the opening minute of the third period to draw even.
Denyn Smith had the Tigers’ other goal. Kaiden Morin made 28 saves in the loss. SEAC dropped to third in their division at 11-8-4, while Lethbridge is fourth with a 7-10-5 record.
Tyler Broesky and Tyler Miller represented the Tigers at the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League’s all-star game Saturday, helping Team South to a 5-4 win over Team North.
Bantam AA
All but three players registered points in the bantam AA Hounds’ 11-2 win over the Okotoks Oilers Friday night at the Moose Rec Centre, and one of them was the backup goalie.
Luke Renschler’s hat trick led the way in a one-sided affair. Brady Mahar, Braden Patey and Braxton Thornton each had two-goal games.
Shots on goal were relatively close given the score: 39-27 in the Hounds’ favour.
Peewee AA
In two games the peewee AA Hounds fired 139 shots at opposition goals, showcasing their dominance.
On Saturday Medicine Hat beat Taber 6-3 at the Moose Rec Centre. Up 3-0 early, they had little to worry about.
Jesse Klimosko had a hat trick to lead the way. Shots were 50-18.
Sunday in Chestermere was more of the same, though with a final score of 17-1. Shots were 89-14 and two players — Deegan Kinniburgh and Josh Evaschesen — had five goals each. Klimosko had another three. It was 16-0 through 40 minutes.
Peewee girls
They’ve won the season series but there’s no doubt Medicine Hat’s peewee girls have had their best games against the squad from Red Deer this season.
On Sunday in Red Deer the two teams met for the fourth time, and as usual it wasn’t decided until the late-going.
Red Deer scored twice in the final few minutes, the last with 30 seconds left and the goalie pulled to salvage a 4-4 tie.
Taya Christie, Jailyn Painter, Riley Gramlich, and Brianna Finke scored for Medicine Hat, while Maddy Ferguson made 20 saves in net.
The Wildcats win the regular season series 2-1-1 and have seven games left in the Rocky Mountain Female Hockey League season. They also beat Okotoks 6-1 Saturday, getting a hat trick from Finke and other goals from Leila Schultz, Brooke Johnson and Kiera Grant.
