Medicine Hat News

Mads Søgaard has already started turning heads with Team Denmark.

The 18-year-old Medicine Hat Tigers goaltender was in the spotlight for his country’s IIHF World Junior Championship pre-tournament game against Finland Friday in Langley. While Denmark fell 7-0,Søgaard created cause for concern among opposing countries with 33 saves, including a jaw-dropping glove stop in the first period.

Watching the play through traffic, Søgaard was forced to react when a pass from the point was deflected across the slot and onto the tape of a Finnish attacker. The 6-foot-7, 196-pound netminder sprung across his crease and snagged the ensuing shot off the goal line to preserve a 2-0 deficit.

Søgaard and the Danes open their World Junior Championship campaign against Team Canada on Dec. 26 at 6 p.m.
