Medicine Hat News
They only played once this past weekend due to Remembrance Day, but the South East Athletic Club’s Tigers midget 15-year-old team made the most of it.
SEAC went to Calgary Saturday and shut out the Canucks 6-0. Brendan Olson was credited with 23 saves through 40 minutes although there was no shot total given on the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League website.
Ethan Machan scored twice and added an assist, while Connor Groves, Gerret Harty, Vaughn Strutt and Mason Mowat were credited with the other goals.
Now 6-3-2, the Tigers are third place in their South Division. They host Calgary’s Rangers Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Hockey Hounds.
Midget AA
They played on a holiday but when 11 a.m. came, everything stopped at the Bill Kurucz Memorial Tournament in Edmonton Sunday.
Medicine Hat’s midget AA Hounds and the Saskatoon Icehawks observed the traditional minute of silence, then resumed play.
The Hounds lost that game 4-3, but it was their only setback of the weekend. On Monday they took home gold, beating the Strathcona Act Warriors 6-3.
Other wins included a 6-0 shutout of Strathcona Saturday and a 5-1 win over Airdrie Sunday.
In Monday’s semifinals they beat Edmonton’s Candian Athletic Club 6-2, getting two goals from Matthew Lafferty.
Jacob Milne had a pair in the final as Medicine Hat stormed to a four-goal first period. Goalie Teron Funk only had to make 14 saves for the win as his team outshot CAC37-17, but Funk was named the tournament’s best goaltender.
Bantam AA
The bantam AA Hounds earned a 5-3 win over Taber Friday at the Kinplex.
Caleb Garrecht and Zach Hauck each had a goal and an assist in the victory while Tiaga Hernandez, Carson Christianson and Aiden Ma also scored for Medicine Hat.
Rylan Hodgson made 21 saves in net for the home side.
Peewee AA
Nearly two weeks apart, the Medicine Hat Hounds played the Wheatland Braves to the exact same score on the same rink.
On Friday at the Moose Recreation Centre, the two peewee AA sides played to their second straight 4-4 draw.
The Hounds never trailed for the second game in a row but had to settle for a single point when Nathan Maloney scored for the Braves in the final minute.
The two teams had battled to a tie Oct. 27 as well. Samuel Hynes and Jesse Klimosko each had two goals for Medicine Hat this time, and they outshot Wheatland 35-22. Julian Laqua and Ryan Miller each had two assists.
Peewee girls
If a provincial title is their goal, the Medicine Hat Wildcats peewee girls team had a surprising win Saturday.
Facing the defending Alberta champions from Olds, the Wildcats earned an 11-1 win.
At Hockey Hounds Arena, the host team only outshot Olds 34-20 but dominated a lot more than that on the scoreboard.
Taya Christie turned aside 19 shots in goal. Brooke Johnson, Riley Gramlich and Keira Grant each scored twice. Keyana Bert, Emma Witkowski, Hannah Orr, Katie Kuipers and Ryan Harvey-Zenk had the others.
