Medicine Hat News

Another week, another minor hockey team going the extra mile to give back to the community.

This time it’s the midget AA Hounds, who got a win and a tie on the ice this past weekend and are gearing up for their annual cancer awareness game this Saturday at the Kinplex.

The 4:45 p.m. game against Lethbridge will see the Hat boys wearing pink jerseys, which will then be auctioned off. In addition, they’re spending Wednesday evening making caramel popcorn to be sold at the Saturday game, with all proceeds going to a cancer foundation.

They earned a big 3-2 win in Okotoks this past Saturday, with Connor Miller scoring the winner shorthanded with 5:16 to go. Medicine Hat outshot Okotoks 38-14 but didn’t have a lead until Miller’s winner.

Jacob Milne and Ryley Manz had the other Hounds goals. The game also included a surprising number of fights, with two bouts breaking out in the third period plus an extra Okotoks player given a game misconduct for head contact. One of Okotoks’ coaches also got a game misconduct after the final whistle.

On Sunday in Calgary, Brandon Kasdorf had the lone Hounds goal. No information was given as to the lone Calgary Bruins goal in a 1-1 tie. Nate Hoffman made 23 saves in the Hat net.

Bantam AAA

The South East Athletic Club bantam AAA Tigers had a five-game unbeaten streak snapped Sunday.

At Hockey Hounds Arena, the Calgary Bisons laid an 8-3 beating on the Tigers, who had earned a 5-5 tie in Okotoks the day before.

A wild second period saw the Bisons turn a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 lead. Connor Gourley had two of those goals, only one of which came on a power play.

Shane Smith had a goal 16 seconds in for the home side, while Roman Cherniak and Denyn Smith had the others. Kaiden Morin was pulled after making 24 saves through two periods.

SEAC had a big second period Saturday in Okotoks, going up 5-2 until two late goals before the last intermission gave the host Oilers some hope. They parlayed that into a single point with the lone goal of the third.

Okotoks outshot South East 48-30, as Bodee Weiss came up big for the Tigers in net. Cherniak, Dawson Seitz and Kieran Christianson each had a goal and an assist while the other goals were scored by Tyler Broesky and Matthew MacPherson.

SEAC is on the road this weekend.

Midget 15’s

The SEAC midget 15-year-old team continues to roll, making the most of its lone home game this weekend.

On Saturday, the Tigers beat the Lloydminster’s Bobcats 5-0. Aidan Low made 28 saves for the shutout.

Tigers players got 47 shots on the Lloydminster net. Ethan Machan had the first and last goals of the day, while Hayden Prosofsky, Jarred Schrock and Cole Rath had the others.

They host Red Deer Saturday (2:15 p.m.) and the Calgary Bruins Sunday (12 p.m.), both at Hockey Hounds.

Bantam AA

At the Moose Recreation Centre Saturday, the bantam AA Hounds played the Central Alberta Selects to a 4-4 draw.

Ty Flaig and Gavin Smith gave the hosts an early lead but it took Dawson Stewart’s power play goal with 2:21 left to tie it and earn Medicine Hat a point. Braxton Thornton had the other goal.

Zach Ferguson made 31 saves as his Hounds were outshot 35-25.

Peewee girls

The Wildcats peewee girls team improved to 4-0, beating Airdrie 8-2 and Lethbridge 8-0 this past weekend.

In Airdrie Saturday, Brianna Finke had a hat trick, Ryan Harvey-Zenk added a pair and the Wildcats cruised. Keira Grant, Treah Hall and Keyana Bert scored as well.

On home ice Sunday, Maddy Ferguson earned the shutout. No scorers were reported.

Peewee AA

The peewee AA Hounds had a good tilt with the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red team Sunday, but were able to continue their now 5-game winning streak.

Though the Hounds never trailed in a 6-4 win, Lethbridge outshot the hosts 24-21 and were within one until Deegan Bert scored with 3:21 to go.

Noah Derouin scored twice, while Jesse Klimosko, Josh Evaschesen and Ryan Miller had the other Hat goals. Beck Boiteau got the win in goal.

That followed a 13-2 blowout in Taber Saturday. Klimosko and Miller had hat tricks while Evaschesen, Josiah Jackson and Deegan Kinniburgh each scored twice. Kaige Schafer made 25 saves in net.

The Hounds host Okotoks Friday at 7 p.m. and Wheatland — the team that’s handed them their only loss of the season — Saturday at 3:45 p.m. at the Moose Rec Centre.
