The Medicine Hat College Rattlers men’s soccer team kicked off their Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference with a rousing 2-0 victory over the Olds Broncos Saturday, but were cut down to .500 with Sunday’s 2-0 setback to the SAIT Trojans.

“It was a good weekend. We had two hard fought games. We’ve taken a couple of injuries, but hopefully nothing serious,”said Rattlers head coach Ian Tully. “We were deserved winners (Saturday) and (Sunday) we unfortunately just didn’t have enough offensively.”

Alosious Kun put the Ratters on the board with their first goal of the season just past the 21-minute mark of Saturday’s contest in Olds, then Connor Ismond followed up with an insurance marker just over 10 minutes later to take some space into the half.

Rattlers goalkeeper Joao Vitor Duz Batista recorded one save in the victory, while Olds’ Ryan Murphy took the three-save loss.

Despite holding SAIT to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes of Saturday’s game, Trojans midfielder Dean Northover scored off an Armando Garcia pass to take over a lead just two minutes into the second half.

Joseph Lambele doubled up on the lead in the 31st minute, leaving Batista with a three-save loss. SAIT’s David Miguez was untested in the victory.

“We lost our main striker today, he took a knock (in Olds), which hurt us. But to be honest, SAIT were a strong team. It was a tough battle, but they were a bit too much for us,”Tully said of the loss. “They know we were in that game. The goals we gave up, the first one there was a hint of offside — it may have been, may not have been … so we have to live with that. On the second one we lost a little bit of focus for about five seconds and it cost us — but the truth is we didn’t create enough at the other end of the field.”

The Rattlers men’s soccer team returns to the Snake Pit for their home opener Saturday against the Ambrose Lions at 4 p.m. The Rattlers continue their two-game homestand Sunday against the Lethbridge Kodiaks.

Women open at 0-2

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s soccer team was dealt a pair of losses to open the ACAC season on the road this weekend.

After putting up a strong fight in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Olds Broncos, the Rattlers came up against an onslaught in a 6-0 loss to the Trojans on Sunday at SAIT.

Medicine Hat’s Aleena Matthews put the Rattlers in front with an unassisted goal in the 20th minute, leaving the Rattlers ahead at the half, but Felicia Rodney stole the game away for Olds with goals in the 64th and 87th minutes.

Kassidy Suberlak stopped six shots between the posts for Medicine Hat, while Auslin Rae McDaniel-Perrin took the victory on three saves.

Things didn’t get any easier for the Rattlers Sunday, as SAIT’s Sage Meyers and Maddie Lee both potted a pair, while Cheyanne Holland and Deanna Kuan added individual marks to secure a lopsided 6-0 victory.

Suberlak stopped 6-of-12 shots in the loss, while SAIT’s Amy Offredi wasn’t tested once in the victory.

The Rattlers women’s soccer team will host the Ambrose Lions Saturday at 2 p.m. for their home opener before welcoming the Lethbridge Kodiaks to the Snake Pit Sunday.
