Medicine Hat News A handful of Medicine Hat seniors are at the Canada 55-plus Games in Saint John, N.B. this week, and a couple already have medals to show for their efforts. Guy Riddell and Gordon Masson beat a host team in the men’s doubles 70-over pickleball bronze medal game Wednesday. Their 2-0 (11-8, 11-5) victory followed a narrow 2-1 (11-7, 6-11, 11-7) loss to the eventual silver medallists from Nova Scotia. Riddell and Masson went 3-1 Wednesday morning to earn a spot in the playoffs, where they routed a Yukon team in the quarter-finals. There were nine teams in all in the competition, which began Tuesday. Another Hat duo, Carolyn Snyder and Charlene Andreas, went 5-3 in the round robin of women’s doubles 55-over to finish third entering playoffs, but fell 15-7 to a Nova Scotia team in the quarter-finals. Manitoba teams finished first and second in their division. Up next for the Hat contingent is mixed doubles play, which winds up Friday. With more than 1,500 participants competing in 24 events, the national games first took place in 1996 with Medicine Hat hosting the 1998 event. Kamloops has been announced as the 2020 host. 8
