Things are about to get dirty at the Medicine Hat Drag Strip.
The Medicine Hat Boggers Mug Bog returns to the local strip for 10th consecutive year of filth-flinging fun on Saturday afternoon, and organizer Derek Yanke says the action seems to ramp up on annual basis.
“Every year it seems our crowd grows a little more and with the track we try to add a few things every year,” he said, adding there will be some special entertainment at intermission this year as well. “This year, for our 10th anniversary we decided to book a band, 3 Hole Punch from Medicine Hat here, and they’re going to play a set for everyone.”
Yanke added he expects around 50 entries for the event — all trying to clock in the fastest time while ripping through 200 feet of 18-inch deep mud. Anyone interested in trying out the track can register in person at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Yanke added the club is tasked with digging out and muddying up a section of land between the drag strip and the bleachers and then patching things up like they were never there —but it’s all worth it once the mud starts flying.
“Every year we have to reclaim it back to its natural state because they use it for the drag strip, and for aesthetic reasons,” said Yanke. “We have sponsors who help, we dig out the pit and then we fill it up with dirt and water and create the mud.”
Racing kicks off at noon and is expected to conclude at around 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. Admission is free for children aged 12-and-under.
