Mavs haven’t clinched playoff spot yet

Medicine Hat News

The Medicine Hat Mavericks almost clinched a playoff spot Thursday night, but they’ve got plenty of chances left.

With the Western Major Baseball League-leading Mavs on a night off, they got to do some scoreboard watching. If both Brooks and Fort McMurray lost, they could finish no lower than fourth in the Eastern Division. The top four make playoffs.

Edmonton beat Brooks 10-3, but Fort McMurray salvaged a 6-4 win at home against Yorkton, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Giants now come to Athletic Park for four games, starting with a 7:05 p.m. outing tonight against Medicine Hat. Any Mavs win in their final 16 games, or any Giants loss will ensure a Hat playoff spot.

Fort McMurray and Brooks are far from out of the picture. Third place Edmonton is 15-18, fourth-place Lethbridge is 13-20 while Fort McMurray (12-21) and Brooks (10-22) could easily catch them.
