Medicine Hat News The last time the Medicine Hat Mavericks were this hot, Athletic Park was under water. The Mavs ran their winning streak to 13 games Friday, beating the Edmonton Prospects 13-7 in front of 1,053 fans who were thankful for some cloudy skies on an otherwise sweltering evening. Reed Odland, Colton Wright and Sal Rodriguez each had home runs, Alex Dafoe struck out six in 5 2/3 innings and Medicine Hat cruised to a 23-3 record, best in the Western Major Baseball League. The home runs were more icing on the cake as the Mavs staked a 6-0 lead through the first three innings. Julien Ly’s 2-RBI triple in the third followed Rodriguez’s RBI double, at which point Edmonton mercifully pulled starting pitcher Brenden Wiun. The Prospects got four runs back in the seventh off reliever Nathan Stark, but it was too little, too late as they fell to 12-17. The teams match up again Saturday at 7:05 p.m., then the Mavs host Swift Current for the second Sunday in a row at 2:05 p.m. If they win both they’ll have a new team record for consecutive wins, besting the streak of 14 set in 2013. That year’s Mavericks played out of Jeffries Field due to flooding at Athletic Park, and went 39-7 in the regular season before falling out in the league finals to Melville. 8
